Silently remembering the victims of Taiwan's typhoon Morakot, mourners observed 88 seconds of silence marking the 8th of August, the date the deadly typhoon hit the island's south.

Leading the national service was Taiwan’s President, Ma Ying-jeou. He said much more needed to be done to stop such a catastrophe from happening again.
For the work that should have been done better by the government, such as water and soil conservation, flood prevention, and bridge construction, we will conduct strict reviews for improvement.

Typhoon Morakot killed more than 740 people. It was the worst storm to hit the country in 50 years. Donations have been pledged by many foreign states, among them, China.
"We have received generous donations from the Chinese government and fellow Chinese compatriots, including more than 1000 mobile houses and other necessities.”

As Taiwan begins to rebuild its infrastructure the scars of Morakot are highly visible and it could take up to three years for the reconstruction to be complete.
