Six workers died on Sunday in an elevator shaft in a Hong Kong high-rise after they fell 20 storeys when a construction platform collapsed. The building will be 118 storeys high when completed next year. Hong Kong leader Donald Tsang said the cause of the accident is being investigated.
"We must try every possible way to reduce this kind of accidents. I have instructed the Secretary for Labour and Welfare to investigate the cause and follow up with the families. The Social Welfare and Labour Department are providing help and support to the families of the victims."
The building’s developer, Sun Hung Kai, has agreed to pay each of the victims’ families around $128,000 on top of normal compensation payments. A government statement said there have been eight fatal construction industrial accidents so far this year. Last year, there were sixteen. Construction accidents in Hong Kong declined by about 76 percent from 1998 to 2008, as the government works to enhance safety.
