The Food and Drug Administration has approved the new swine flu vaccine, meaning mass vaccinations can start as soon as next month. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told Congress that limited supply should start trickling out the first week of October.

"Once ready, the vaccine will be shipped through a central distribution system and available in up to 90,000 sites around the country."

Two weeks later near the middle of the month, about 45 million doses should arrive. Additional shipments should continue to arrive at schools and clinics throughout the fall and winter.

The government has ordered 195 million doses but says it will order more if there’s enough demand. In a usual year, about a hundred million Americans get the flu vaccine. However, it is unclear whether the H1N1 stream will prompt higher demand.

Because the vaccine now has FDA approval, it meets government quality standards and is made properly. Last week, it was announced that people getting the swine flu vaccine will need only one dose and that protection should kick in in a little more than a week.
