In one of his first acts as president, Brack Obama said he would close the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay by January. But senior administration officials now tell the AP that might not happen. White House officials say the January deadline may slip because of the difficulties in completing the lengthy review of detainee files and resolving thorny legal and logistical questions.

With only four months to go until the January deadline, many difficult issues remain. They include establishing a new set of rules for military trails, finding a location for a new prison to house detainees, and finding host countries for those detainees who can be released. These challenges have prompted top Republicans in Congress to demand the prison remain open, saying it is too dangerous to close Gitmo. Some Democrats agree, and Congress has denied funds to shut it down.

The prison at Guantanamo Bay was set up by former President George W. Bush shortly after the September 11th attacks. It has housed suspected al-Qaeda, Taliban, and foreign fighters captured in Afghanistan and elsewhere.
